Notes for Abstraction:Patients suffering from an acute stroke during this hospitalization are not considered to have been admitted solely for the purpose of the performance of elective carotid endarterectomy. If the patient was being treated for an acute stroke during this hospitalization, even if a carotid endarterectomy was performed, answer “No” for this data element.

Inclusion Exclusion
  • Patients with an ICD-9-CM procedure code of 38.12, if medical record documentation states that the patient was admitted for the elective performance of this procedure.
  • Patients with an ICD-9-CM procedure code of 38.12, if medical record documentation indicates that the patient is also being treated for an acute stroke during this hospitalization.
