Definition:Documentation of venous thromboembolism (VTE) prophylaxis ordered anytime from hospital arrival to 48 hours after Surgery End Time. VTEs are the formation, development, or existence of a blood clot or thrombus within the venous system.

Notes for Abstraction:
  • Collect any mechanical form(s) of prophylaxis for which there is documentation of being placed on the patient anytime from hospital arrival to 48 hours after Surgery End Time.
  • Prophylaxis can be ordered anytime from hospital arrival to 48 hours after Surgery End Time.
    Example:
    • The patient is a 69-year-old female who had a right lobectomy. The surgeon ordered an intermittent pneumatic device; select 3, “Intermittent pneumatic compression devices.”
