Release Notes:
Data Element
Version 2010A1

Data Element Name: Temperature Value
Collected For: SCIP-Inf-7,
Definition:The degree of hotness or coldness of the body (in °Fahrenheit) recorded within the first fifteen minutes after leaving the operating room
Suggested Data Collection Question:What was the first temperature (in °Fahrenheit) recorded within the first fifteen minutes after leaving the operating room?

Length:1-5 or UTD
Allowable Values:

0.0 – 300.0 °Fahrenheit
UTD = Unable to Determine

Notes for Abstraction:
  • If the temperature value is unable to be determined from medical record documentation, enter UTD.
  • The medical record must be abstracted as documented (taken at “face value”). When the value documented is obviously in error (not a valid number/value) and no other documentation is found that provides this information, the abstractor should select “UTD.”
Documentation indicates the Temperature Value was 33X.0° Fahrenheit. No other documentation in the medical record provides a valid value. Since the Temperature Value is not a valid value (all characters must be numeric), the abstractor should select “UTD.”
Transmission of a case with an invalid value as described above will be rejected from the QIO Clinical Warehouse and the Joint Commission’s Data Warehouse. Use of “UTD” for Temperature Value allows the case to be accepted into the warehouse.
  • When two temperatures are recorded with the same time, abstract the higher value.
  • If the temperature is recorded in °Celsius, convert the temperature to °Fahrenheit using the following formula: 9/5C + 32 = F
  • The 15-minute timeframe begins when the patient leaves the operating room.
Suggested Data Sources:
  • Vital signs graphic record
  • ICU notes
  • PACU/recovery room record
