| Definition: | Reasons for not prescribing aldosterone receptor antagonist for LVSD in the outpatient setting.
The main action of aldosterone is to increase sodium re-absorption by the kidneys. At the same time it increases the excretion of hydrogen and potassium ions. Aldosterone receptor antagonists block the effects of aldosterone, therefore decrease sodium re-absorption and water retention by the kidneys and consequently lead to a decrease in blood pressure.
Other reasons include hyperkalemia or renal dysfunction or dialysis.
