Question: Evidence of Atherosclerosis

Is an inclusion plus an exclusion needed in order to answer 'Yes" for this data element, or would just an inclusion suffice? Also, is the degree of severity needed, i.e., carotid artery stenosis?

Answer:

If both an inclusion and exclusion are documented, select 'Yes' for Evidence of Atherosclerosis. If the patient has one or more exlcusions and no documented inclusions, select 'No'. Qualifiers are not used in this definition. For the majority of cases you should be selecting 'Yes'.

This data element has been deleted with version 3.2b specifications, effective October 1, 2010. In the future, the physician will need to document "No Atherosclerosis" as a reason for not prescribing statins at discharge to exclude the case.
