Question: Does Appendix H, Table 2.2 exclude ambulatory stroke patients from the VTE prophylaxis?

The exclusion table in Appendix H lists exclusions for VTE prophylaxis. Does this table mean that stroke patients that are ambulatory are excluded from the VTE measure, or does it mean that "ambulatory" does not exclude the patient from VTE prophylaxis and is not an allowable reason for no VTE prophylaxis?

Answer:

Table 2.2, VTE Prophylaxis Exclusion Table means that ambulation *does not count* as VTE prophylaxis. This is different than an exclusion from the measure population. Previously, ambulatory patients were considered an excluded population from the STK-1 denominator.

Medications, devices, etc. listed on Table 2.1, VTE Prophylaxis Inclusion Table count as prophylaxis.
