Question: When both SCDs and TEDS are applied on the same day , how are they abstracted?

Answer:

If a patient was admitted on 12/1/20XX and had bilateral SCDs applied at 13:00 on 12/1/20XX and graduated compression stockings (TEDs) were applied at 22:00 on 12/1/20XX, select only value “3”. The date of initial VTE Prophylaxis is 12/01/ 20XX. If bilateral GCS are administered on the day of admission and SCD is administered the day after admission, select “3”. The date of initial VTE Prophylaxis is the day after hospital admission.

If GCS was the only prophylaxis administered the day of and/or the day after hospital admission, select “4”. If value '4' is selected, no other selections should be recorded. A reason for not administering another form of prophylaxis must be documented to include the case in the numerator when GSC is the sole form of prophlaxis administered. Without a documented reason, the case will fall out.

*When an acceptable form of prophylaxis (SQ hep, LMWH, SCDs - see allowable values for VTE Prophylaxis) is administered the day of or day after hospital admission, the case is in the numerator. A "reason" is not needed when any acceptable form of prophylaxis is adminsiteed the day of or day after hospital admission (the algorithm bypasses the decision point Reason for No VTE Prophylaxis). A "reason" is not needed if SCDs/venous foot pump is administered the day of or day after hospital admission, rather than pharmacological prophylaxis. **A reason is needed and must be documented in the medical record when no VTE Prophylaixs is administered (none/not documented) OR GSC alone without another form of prophylaxis is administereded.*
