Question: Stroke Measures STK-7 and STK-9

After reading the DSC Update, it appears that beginning Oct.1 2009, The Joint Commission will no longer be collecting data on dysphagia screening and smoking cessation counseling even for primary stroke centers (or those facilities seeking certification as a primary stroke center). Is this correct?

Answer:

STK-7: Dysphagia Screening and STK-9: Smoking Cessation/Advice/Counseling were not endorsed by the National Quality Forum (NQF), and therefore, not included in the ORYX core stroke measure set.

Joint Commission certified Primary Stroke Centers must collect and submit data on all 10 stroke measures (including STK-7 and STK-9) through Dec. 31, 2009, to maintain their certification.

As of January 1, 2010, Joint Commission certified Primary Stroke Centers must collect and submit data only on the eight NQF-endorsed stroke measures to maintain their certification. (In 2010, Stroke-7 and Stroke-9 will be retired.)
