Question: Stroke that occurs after admission

If a patient is admitted to the hospital with another medical condition and suffers a stroke several days later while still inpatient, is this patient included in the GWTG-CSTK measure set? If so, they would not pass a lot of the data abstracted elements, or the questions would not be able to be answered.

Thank you,

Answer:

Deborah,

If a patient is admitted to the hospital with another medical condition, then stroke should not be the ICD-10-CM Principal Diagnosis Code. Per the definition, the PX DX is The ICD-10-CM diagnosis code that is primarily responsible for the admission of the patient to the hospital for care during this hospitalization.

If the patient was assigned an ICD-10-CM Principal Diagnosis Code for stoke at discharge, then the case is included in the measure population. Thank you.
