Question: Will Evidence of Atherosclerosis remain a data element?

This is follow up to a prior question: "";.

How should we abstract "Evidence of Atherosclerosis" when there are no inclusion or exclusion terms documented in the medical record? The patient in question does have a history of previous stroke. This data element is often difficult to abstract because evidence of atherosclerosis is not clearly documented.

Select 'Yes' for "Evidence of Atherosclerosis" for the case above with prior history of stroke. The data element "Evidence of Atherosclerosis" has been removed from the STK-6 algorithm in version 3.2 of the specifications manual, effective October 1, 2010. As of this date, the MD will need to document that the patient does not have atherosclerosis to exclude the case as a "Reason for Not Prescribing Statin Medication at Discharge".

See STK-6 MIF pdf and definition for "Reason for Not Prescribing Statin Medication at Discharge" in Alphabetical Data Dict pdf.
