Question: Will Evidence of Atherosclerosis remain a STK-6 data element?

When looking for evidence of atherosclerosis, do we look only for physician documentation or do we also look in diagnostic test results (ex. coratid doppler) for the inclusion terms? This is a difficult data element to abstract.

If there is documentation of ANY evidence of atherosclerosis in the medical record, select 'Yes'. Diagnostic test results may be used. The data element, Evidence of Atherosclerosis, will be removed from the STK-6 algorithm with Version 3.2b of the specifications manual, effective Oct. 1, 2010. (See STK-6 MIF and algorithm). Going forward, the physician will need to document that the patient does not have atherosclerosis as a Reason for Not Prescribing Statin Medication at Discharge.
